Rachel Hills’ The Sex Myth is by far one of the most relieving books I have ever read. Her analysis of popular culture and the way we (in the English speaking world) view sex left me feeling, refreshingly, normal. Usually I’m not one for non-fiction books but after reading the introduction I almost screamed ‘yes’! This book untangles our sex lives in ways that I couldn’t possibly explain, especially with Hills’ precision and finesse. Her analysis opened my mind to the interactions in my life (and quite possibly most people’s lives), which I had not noticed, putting into words those thoughts and feelings I haven’t been able to fully conceptualise or explain.
As a woman in her twenties this is a book that I want to scream about and a book I will pass on to my friends (actually I’ve already bought a copy for a friends birthday). I’m so glad that I am able to read this now, as a relatively young person, it has cleared away my anxieties about my current sex life, and, I feel as though it has lifted some future burdens (which without reading this book I probably would have allowed myself to stress about too much).
But most of all, this book has taught me that we are all normal, but a normal in the way that there is no ‘normal’. The diverse arguments and voices Hills writes about has finally affirmed, to me, that there are so many variations of ‘normal’, that there really isn’t one ‘normal’, so therefore everyone is ‘normal’. If you read the book this will hopefully make sense to you. It’s a very liberating lesson and I feel blessed that I am able to understand it at such a young age. Especially because I feel this kind of liberation is often reserved for older women, (considered to be heading into the twilight years of their sex lives) which of course is ridiculous assumption, made even more ridiculous after reading The Sex Myth.
I hope that everyone (not just women) who comes across this book reads it, because it’s one that will change the way you view your life. It’s relieving, it’s liberating, it’s intelligent, it is a book that will make you feel better and more secure about yourself.
