The 5th Wave was brilliant; a fast, realistic action thriller, but the Infinite Sea falls very short of it's predecessor. Rick Yancey just does very little with this book, resulting in nothing short of a disappointment.

Let's start with the good stuff; and to be honest there is a bit more then I originally thought as Yancey uses the sequel to expand on his character's further, keep the audience's trust wavering and focus on unique points of view....but that is where my praise ends, unfortunately.

A bulk of the novel is spent around the same location with very little plot actually developing within the 300 pages that this book presents the reader. Yancey's language was still solid in this novel, but his contradictions, which were a highlight in his last book, are so repetitive and heavy in this version that the reader sometimes has no idea what the hell he is saying. When something "is everything, and nothing" how is the audience supposed to truly understand Yancey's characters?

Characters were also expanded on, but not in the right way: Unnecessary characters were added to the story and Yancey managed to turn the relatable, witty Cassie into a whimpering fool that really starts to annoy not only the reader, but the other characters in the book.

Oh man, this pains me to write this review because the first book was sooo good, but Yancey truly falls short here. Although his action is still brutal and kickass it is still few and far between in this novel, making it somewhat pointless compared to the epicness of the 5th Wave. I guess the lesson you can learn from this is don't set your expectations too high...
Why, Yancey, Why!?

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey is the second instalment in the Fifth Wave series, and unfortunately is nowhere near as good as the first one.

The plot lacks any serious meaning and after finishing the book I was left feeling confused about what its purpose was. Towards the end of the novel it starts to reflect the hyper-intense and engaging plot of its prequel, but even then makes the rest of the book seem even more boring in comparison.

A similar problem that I had with The Fifth Wave is that the way the romantic relationships are developed just do not make any sense, and leaves the characters coming across as two dimensional.

Ultimately I just wanted so much more from this book in terms of plot, character development and world building. It was a disappointing read.
