The operating environment for future conflicts will be a place where Soldiers will struggle just to survive on a battlefield more lethal than anything seen since at least World War II. This is the scenario against which Army commanders at echelon should constantly train their formations for war. Throughout the force; however, we often find unit leaders at the brigade combat team (BCT) level and below struggling to imagine this hyper-competitive operating environment.
