Fifteen-year-old Lina is a Lithuanian girl living an ordinary life -- until Soviet officers invade her home and tear her family apart. Separated from her father and forced onto a crowded train, Lina, her mother, and her young brother make their way to a Siberian work camp, where they are forced to fight for their lives. Lina finds solace in her art, documenting these events by drawing. Risking everything, she imbeds clues in her drawings of their location and secretly passes them along, hoping her drawings will make their way to her father's prison camp. But will strength, love, and hope be enough for Lina and her family to survive?

Ruta Sepetys

Ruta Sepetys was born and raised in Michigan in a loving houshold, enjoyed her school years and bravely stepped into the world when she left home for Paris, France to live and work.

She has her roots in a completely different medium, that of music and It was only when she visited relatives in Lithuania that she discovered a family history that was seemingly hidden, and realised that there was a personal story to tell of a cataclysmic event in European history that is not commonly known.

Between Shades of Gray is a story that is both poignant and extraordinary. It is both difficult to read, because it is so painful and so personal, and also uplifting - to discover the joy and spirit of the Lithuanian people.

Ruta Sepetys now lives in Tennessee with her family, enjoys their company and that of her friends and is passionate about the arts and truth.

Wow what a powerful read. This is a historical fiction novel about 15 year old Lina who lives in Lithuania in 1941 when the NKVD storm through the country and take Lina's family and other families away from their homes and put them into forced labour camps. The book is told in Lina's point of view which involves death, pain and disease. The Author Ruta Sepetys spoke to people who actually went through this in real life. Even though the characters are not real, the events in the book are which is heartbreaking to discover what thousands of innocent people went through. The story line is around Lina, her mother Elena and her younger brother Jonas. Lina is a young artist who she draws pictures of events that happen to her and her family which she has to hide from the NKVD otherwise if they discovered these pictures she would be shot dead. Drawing her emotions is one of the ways that keeps Lina sane during such hard times. I enjoyed all the characters in the book which were all trying to just survive. Each chapter is short which I did not mind. I gave this book a five out of five. It is a great book if you have an interest in WWII.
