Tim Winton's Breath, winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award, is a story about the wildness of youth and learning to live with its passing.

When paramedic Bruce Pike is called out to deal with another teenage adventure gone wrong, he knows better than his colleague, better than the kid's parents, what happened and how. Thirty years before, that dead boy could have been him.

A relentlessly gripping and deeply moving novel about the damage you do to yourself when you're young and think you're immortal.

Tim has a wonderful way of capturing your attention and making the story live. Likable but real characters make for an easy read.

This book took me away down south to special place for all West Australians. I really enjoyed it - especially the surf scenes.

Brilliant, engaging and a story men or women can relate to. You will find Breath hard to put down. A great book also for teenage boys moving towards manhood. Breath is a raw look into the passage of a boy into manhood. One of Winton's true talents is the ability to ensure his readers engage with the protagonist in his novels. It's easy to feel Pikelet's lonliness, frustration and his fear. His passage into manhood comes through his friendships and learning to surf. There is always a dark side to Tim Winton's novels, but this just makes the stories more real and appealing to his readers. While Breath may well be Winton's masterpiece, I really look forward to what comes next from this writer.
