Attached to an order of nuns who had been working in the slums since the 1870s, Jennifer tells the story not only of the women she treated, but also of the community of nuns (including one who was accused of stealing jewels from Hatton Garden) and the camaraderie of the midwives with whom she trained. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

Call The Midwife episodes contain the heartening reassurance of truthfulness in every episode. The people are real. The situations are real. The outcomes all have the ring of reality. It is a pleasure to watch and, when episodes have concluded, to look back on with warmth for the characters and gratitude at the beautiful construction and balance of of story-telling. Please may it continue forever!
Love this whole series! After watching the tv series first, I came across the books and fall in love! It gave me such a more in depth experience as to how things were back in East London. I felt as I was part of the family and I also feel as it has made me more accepting of the beliefs of God.
