The 2023 volume of Ceramics in America is filled with diverse content of interest to students of American ceramics history. The lead article presents a rare glimpse into the practice of nineteenth century Southern "hoodoo" or conjure through the portal of a stoneware ring bottle made for Dr. Peter Davis of Columbia, South Carolina in 1888. An essay on a four-gallon salt-glazed stoneware jar from the David Parr pottery in Richmond, Virginia examines a potter's perspective on the outbreak of the American Civil War. Another featured article present the remarkable ceramics of nineteenth-century potter John Wesley Carpenter who worked in the back country of North Carolina and Virginia. Of particular importance is an analysis of a small porcelain snuff box from the so-called A-marked group of porcelains made in London ca. 1745 from china clay obtained in America's Cherokee Territory. Several thematic articles discuss historic ceramics made and used to promote the abolition of slavery in both America and England. The ceramics of contemporary artists David Mack and Babette Wainwright, whose work is relevant to current historical topics and social issues, are presented in two beautifully illustrated articles.
