Introductory Surveys Artists, A-I
Hardback
Publication Date: 01/07/1997
From Kauffman to Kollwitz, Ende to Edelson, Abakanowicz to Znrn, from the 10th century to the 20th, from Australia to Russia, the Nordic countries to Latin America, the Dictionary of Women Artists profiles some 550 painters, sculptors, photographers and women working in the applied arts. The book deals with the Western tradition of art, and its emphasis is historical. Each artist entry is illustrated and consists of a biography (with an exhibition list where appropriate), a bibliography and a signed interpretive essay by one of 300 contributors from 20 countries. The essays concentrate on the artist's work and place her in an historical context; some contain previously unpublished material, as well as information available in English for the first time. Specific works are discussed that exemplify the artist's style and activity. Introductory surveys focus on training and the changing conditions of work for women artists since the Middle Ages.
