For anyone contemplating visiting the Gallipoli Peninsula, this is a "must take" book.

A very informative and interesting read indeed. I was completely won over by his advice about not traveling to Gallipoli on Anzac Day; it's a place best appreciated and contemplated when it's quiet, far from the seething hordes.

Unlike most Australian authors, he doesn't just concentrate on Anzac; there are guides and explanations of both Suvla and Helles too (few Australians realize that there are Australians buried in virtually every cemetery on the peninsula).

The maps are pretty basic, but that's a common complaint with most Gallipoli books. I also disagree with some of his tactical assessments - for instance, the failure of 3500 Anzacs to overcome 80 Turks and properly exploit the Anzac beachhead was not just becvause of mixed up units and difficult terrain; the Brigade and Divisional leadership on this day was appallingly bad.

But overall, highly recommened.
