It is a cliché to state that heritage is under threat, an assertion so common as to be almost meaningless. Yet it is precisely in that familiarity that the challenges lie. Today the narratives and images of spectacular destruction are characterised by their exceptional scale and almost inconceivable impact. From war to extreme weather events, from unregulated development to looting, both social media and the internet have made destruction commonplace. Much less familiar are the often complex efforts of heritage practitioners to redress the balance to tackle the threats and find solutions. Whether this stems from the application of established professional practice or detailed forensic investigation, the presentation of historic information which is politically neutral or the careful analysis of cause and effect, such projects have important implications for the sector. Whilst the papers in this volume illustrate the work of archaeologists and heritage practitioners in challenging and contested environments, they also highlight the engagement and commitment of individuals and institutions. Both confront not only the physicality of threat, but also the complexities engendered by prejudice, entrenched opinion, vested interest or simple distrust.
