Have you ever defied a pharaoh to run off with a prince?

Ever fallen for a customer who buys beautiful flowers every week but appears unattached?

Ever lusted after a colleague knowing the world would condemn you for it?

In this year's collection of short stories where lost dogs can unite strangers, the death of a loved one really can be a blessing in disguise and a fallen woman does what she must to protect a family member, Romance Writers of Australia's best of the best for 2017 prove onyx stands for love, for hope, and for happy endings.

The Little Gems Short Story competition is a mainstay of the RWA contest year. Although it commenced in 2004 with Ruby, the anthology has been produced in its present form since Pearl 2008. Competition to be included in the annual anthology is fierce resulting in a very fine selection of romantic stories from all romance subgenres. Judging is rigorous with each entry read by three judges and scored for writing technique, character development, and the elusive X Factor. The stories must include the current year gem, Onyx for 2017, be under 3000 words and rated sweet to mild in sexual content. Our judges never cease to be amazed and delighted by the creativity and variety of entries within those guidelines.

You won't be able to stop at just one.

Leisl Leighton

Leisl is a tall red head with an overly large imagination. As a child, she identified strongly with Anne of Green Gables. Given that she is a voracious reader and born performer, it came as no surprise to anyone when she did a double major in English Literature and Drama for her BA, then went on to a career as an actor, singer and dancer, as well as scriptwriter, stage manager and musical director for cabaret and theatre restaurants (one of which she co-owned and ran for six years). After starting a family Leisl stopped performing and instead began writing the stories that had been plaguing her dreams.

Leisl's stories have won and placed in many competitions in Australia and the US, including the STALI, Golden Opportunities, Heart of the West, Linda Howard Award of Excellence, Touch of Magic and many others. Leisl lives in the leafy suburbs of Melbourne with her two beautiful boys, lovely hubby, overly spunky dogs, Buffy and Skye, and likes to spend time with family and friends.

She is addicted to the Syfy channel, and her shelves are full of fantasy and paranormal books and scifi DVDs. She sometimes sings in a choir, has worked as a swim teacher, loves to ski, can talk the hind leg off a donkey and has been president of Romance Writers of Australia from 2014 to 2017.

Stella Quinn

Stella Quinn has had a love affair with books since she first discovered the alphabet. She lives in sunny Queensland now, but has lived in England, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea. Boarding school in a Queensland country town left Stella with a love of small towns and heritage buildings (and a fear of chenille bedspreads and meatloaf!) and that is why she loves writing rural romance.

Stella is a keen scrabble player, she's very partial to her four kids and anything with four furry feet, and she is a mediocre grower of orchids. An active member of Romance Writers of Australia, Stella has won their Emerald, Sapphire and Valerie Parv Awards, and finaled in their R*BY Romantic Book of the Year award. You can find and follow Stella Quinn via her website.

Fiona Greene

Fiona Greene loves romance - reading it, and now writing it. Her works range from contemporary stories with strong heroines and even stronger heroes, to journeys across time and space, exploring the infinite possibilities of romance across the universe.

Fiona's motto: What's not to love about a futuristic military leader with a spacecraft? Unless it's a sexy farmer driving a ute? Fiona lives in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband and two incredibly spoilt dogs.
