In Moving: A Memoir of Education and Social Mobility, Dr. Andy Hargreaves-educator, researcher, and adviser-shares his experience of social mobility by offering readers a deeply personal account of his schooling. Beginning with his working-class upbringing in the small town of Accrington in Northwest England in the 1950s and taking readers through to his time at university in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he tells of how his trajectory was charted as early as age seven, when his school placed him with the A class, clearing his path for grammar school, university, and rarefied experiences normally reserved for chose with wealth and privilege. Dr. Hargreaves discusses the effects of class movement and links his narrative to research. He also connects his experiences to 21st century realities and the broader systems that serve to include those already at an advantage and exclude those without financial means and cultural capital. He writes that we all have a collective responsibility to strive for greater equality, inclusive cultures within schools, and inspired teaching to help students find success-without having to leave behind family, friends, communities, and critical aspects of themselves.
