Oz Clarke, Britain's most popular wine writer, is absolutely in tune with what wine drinkers want today - flavour, individuality, excellent value for money and wines that are readily available. Oz has tasted thousands of wines over the past year and here are his tips for good value whites and roses for the coming spring and summer. Oz has chosen over 100 real wines, not faceless brands, wines with individuality and a sense of their origins. There's no need for such wines to cost the earth - it's just a matter of knowing where to look and in this book Oz has done the hard work for you.

All the still white and rose wines in the book cost less than a tenner, with most of the wines nearer the GBP5 mark so there are plenty of memorable flavours out there for you to try without breaking the bank. We love fizz in this country and the longer the sun stays out, the more we drink of it. Oz has selected his favourite Champagnes that deliver top flavours at decent prices, as well as good-value sparklers, both white and rose, at less than GBP15 a bottle, and there are even two black sparkling Shirazes as a final treat.

Oz Clarke

Oz Clarke had an idyllic childhood in the Kent countryside. He was head chorister at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School. He acted, sang and wine-tasted his way through university, then spent a decade acting with the RSC and featuring in West End musicals - he starred as Peron in Evita.

His famous victories in high-profile wine-tasting competitions brought him jobs on two national newspapers, and in 1984 he turned to full time writing and television work. The BBC's Food and Drink made him a household name and was broadcast around the world, as were his later 'Oz and James' wine adventures with James May.

His many books have been translated into sixteen languages, he has won every major wine-writing prize, and he is an Officier de l'Ordre du Merite Agricole. When he is not visiting vineyards and wineries, chairing wine competitions or presenting innovative concerts with Armonico Consort, Oz lives in London and complains about not playing enough golf.
