Parole officers are significantly involved in the potential rehabilitation and desistance of former prisoners, but they face high rates of mental health challenges from occupational stresses, which challenge the integrity of their public safety role. This book provides novel insight into the work routines, occupational stresses, mental health impacts, and professional- and self-identities of this oft-overlooked group of correctional workers. Authors Rosemary Ricciardelli, Mark Norman, Katharina Maier, and Michael P. Taylor conducted and analyzed 150 interviews with parole officers employed in Canada's federal correctional system, either in correctional institutions or community spaces. They examined how parole officers experience and navigate occupational stress and risks; parole work impacts the long-term mental health of workers; workplace culture and relationships affect parole officers' well-being; the COVID-19 pandemic created new occupational routines and stresses; parole officers can be better supported through changes to organizational structures, culture, and practice; and how parole officers understand the importance of carceral space, self presentation, and tensions between supervising and supporting criminalized people. Parole Work in Canada: Caseloads, Cultures, and Carceral Spaces offers evidence-informed recommendations to provide practitioners, policymakers, employers, and stakeholders with knowledge to better recognize and address the toll of parole work on employees and to better meet the mental health needs of correctional workers more broadly. Ultimately, given parole officers' central role in supporting and supervising criminalized individuals, there are compelling reasons for scholars and criminal justice organizations to better understand the views, experiences, and health of parole officers.
