The Lightning Thief : the first book in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series.

Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek god. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong.

Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends and generally trying to stay alive. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea...

"Witty and inspired. Gripping, touching and deliciously satirical...This is most likely to succeed Rowling. Puffin is on to a winner". Amanda Craig, The Times

"Puns, jokes and subtle wit, alongside a gripping storyline". Telegraph

"Perfectly paced, with electrifying moments chasing each other like heartbeats". New York Times

Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan is a teacher and a writer, and has won many awards for his mystery novels for adults.

He says that the idea for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief first came to him while he was teaching Greek mythology at middle school in San Francisco.

But rumour has it that Camp Half Blood actually exists, and Rick spends his summers there recording the adventures of young demigods. Some believe that, to avoid a mass panic among the mortal population, he was forced to swear on the River Styx to present Percy Jackson's story as fiction.

Rick lives in Texas (apart from his summers on Half Blood Hill) with his wife and two sons.

My 11-year-old daughter has devoured all the Percy Jackson books, including the Heroes of Olympus series that comes after these. She says they're much better than the two films, and that the films leave a lot of the story out.

Loved it. Read the whole series (Percy Jackson). My daughter made me to. She asked and kept asking until I did. When I was a kid I loved Greek Mythology and read a lot on it. With Percy Jackson, my daughter had to read on Greek Mythology to be able to understand numerous references and inferences in the percy jackson text. It' good. No, it's great. Rick Riordan has done a great service to children and parents alike. To interest kids in reading and reading more and getting to know more is an amazing job. Plus, the adventures of Percy Jackson are great too. They are just right for kids and teenagers. There is no gore or horror or explicit sex or violence. Great read

Another fantastic series by the genius, Rick Riordan! In this series, the reader is able to travel back to the past, exploring legends of the Greek Gods with the hero Percy Jackson narrating. A wonderful invention.
