Danielle Clode's second book in conjunction with Museum Victoria is as good as her first on Australia's megafauna.
During the Cretaceous period, a vast area of central Australia was covered by a shallow sea, a very different environment to that we see today.
The book focuses mostly on the animals of the region, with useful background information covering the geology, history and climate at the time.
Effective illustrations are crucial for a book of this nature, and like its predecessor, it doesn't disappoint in this regard. It is full of photos, diagrams, and most importantly, spectacular full-colour illustrations of the extinct reptiles, dinosaurs, invertebrates, amphibians, birds and others that roamed Australia's inland sea.
The text is a good balance between giving you enough information, without getting too technical. Smart kids would get a lot out of it, and it also serves as a very useful overview of the subject and thus a perfect starting point for further research.
Very interesting and highly recommended.
