In order to progress onto any surgical speciality training in the UK surgical trainees must pass the MRCS examination. The exam is split into four parts, two written papers, a clinical examination and a viva voce examination. The viva is a particularly difficult element of the exam since candidates are tested across a broad range of topics in surgery, pathology, critical care and basic science.
