From the acclaimed author of India After Gandhi:  a group biography of seven remarkable men and women arrived in India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in order to join the freedom movement and struggle for a country and people other than their own.

In Renegades, Ramachandra Guha gives us a vivid and little-known account of these seven foreigners who devoted themselves to the Indian freedom movement, understanding they would likely face prison for their actions, and possibly die for the cause. He shows us that what they were able to accomplish before and after their jail terms was pioneering work in a variety of fields. Annie Besant promoted the emancipation of women; B.G. Horniman published one of the most out-spoken, provocative newspapers in India; Samuel Stokes, an American Quaker, helped abolish forced labor; Mira Behn wrote pioneering environmental tracts; Philip Spratt fought for the rights of workers; R.R. Keithahn's found a rural university as well as a charitable hospital; Sarala Behn established a pioneering girls' school. Each renegade left a profound impact on the part of India in which they worked and their legacies have continued through the institutions they founded and the generations and individuals they inspired.
