Backspace: The Art of Communication: Works from 1990-2010
Publication Date: 01/01/2011
This book examines two decades of work by the Australian installation artist Robyn Backen. Extensively illustrated with over 100 colour images and 20 drawings, "Backspace" a book of 128 pages shows a full range of artworks from this period. Essays by art historian Susan Best contextualise Backen's work in relation to national and international debates in contemporary art. The first essay considers her installations in relation to environmental issues and ideas about dwelling. The second essay focuses on site-specificity and public art, considering what "site" might mean in a contemporary multicultural society. Complete with timeline and bibliography, this book is a wonderful hybrid: part artist's book, part monograph with a dash of exhibition catalogue.
