Stansfield Turner, a past director of the CIA, once described Reilly as "a man who sold himself to various governments and clearly gained satisfaction ... from manipulating people and governments." "Sold himself to various governments" seems a bit strong-and certainly inapplicable to the mature Reilly, say, after 1914. But he certainly appears to have been-like many spies have been-addicted to the nuts and bolts, the craft, of spying; he enjoyed knowing what the great masses out there didn't, hobnobbing with and claiming membership in a secret elite, living in the shadows, the danger and sexiness of the profession.
