Sticky blood, or antiphospholipid syndrome, or Hughes Syndrome was discovered by Dr Graham Hughes. In a series of clinical articles in the early 1980s, Dr Hughes and his team described the headaches, miscarriages, clotting tendency, strokes, memory loss, the effect on platelets and almost all of the clinical picture now recognized as a distinct syndrome. It was an example of meticulous clinical observation and dogged determination. The author suffers from Hughes Syndrome, and she aims to offer fellow patients a guide to understanding the disease. The messages are simple - blood clots can cause untold damage, and the tendency to "sticky blood" found in Hughes Syndrome can be diagnosed by simple blood tests. The use of medicines, some as simple as aspirin, could protect against the clotting tendency.
