On June 20, 1945, Morna Anne Murray was born in the Canadian coal-mining town of Springhill, Nova Scotia, to Dr. James Carson Murray, the town's physician, and Marion Margaret Murray, a nurse. After expressing an interest in music at an early age, her parents enrolled her in piano lessons. By the time she was fifteen, Anne was studying voice. Every Saturday morning, she took the bus from Springfield to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, for lessons. One of her earliest non-professional performances was of the song "Ave Maria" at her high school graduation in 1962. Following high school, Anne attended Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax for one year. She later studied physical edication at University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. After receiving her degree in 1966 she was encouraged to audition for the 1960s CBC musical variety television show "Singalong Jubilee." Anne was not offered a singing position. However, after a long summer singing in local venues across the Maritimes, Anne began teaching physical education at the high school in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. After one year of teaching, she was cast on "singalong Jubilee" and began a monumental rise to stardom.
