A study of the decline of Christianity in modern Britain. It challenges the generally held view that secularization has been a long and gradual process beginning with the Industrial Revolution, and instead proposes that it has been a catastrophic short-term phenomenon starting with the 1960s. This book questions what it has meant to be religious or irreligious during the last 200 years. The concept of secularization has been founded largely on the obsession of the Victorians and Edwardians for counting heads - through church membership and attendance - as evidence of religious behaviour. This produced an apparent constant religious crisis in urban and industrial Britain.
