The three volumes, each of around 700 pages, will analyse the early (pre-10th century), middle (1000-1900 A.D.) and modern (1900-1959) periods of Tibetan history from a variety of perspectives. Along with key documents and treaties, The History of Tibet will include wide-ranging contributions from more than 70 scholars, including such well-known names in the field as Hugh Richardson, Giuseppe Tucci, Luciano Petech, Samten Karmay, and Melvyn Goldstein. Both articles and extracts from books will be represented, along with a selection of previously unpublished maps and illustrations, and an annotated bibliography of suggested further readings. In total the volumes contain more than 130 articles, including a selection of translated, previously unpublished, and long out-of-print material. While the majority of the contributions reflect contemporary scholarship, the inclusion of writings by pioneers such as Sir Charles Bell and Sir Eric Teichman enables this work to illustrate the development of our knowledge of Tibetan history over the 20th century and reflect the state-of-the-field at the beginning of the new millennium.
