'For readers who want to be entertained, but not at the cost of good writing, The Storyteller and his Three Daughters is the best kind of novel - exquisitely crafted prose, fully developed, believable characters, well-researched historically - and above all, a gripping plot' The Sydney Morning Herald

TOKYO 1884: Sei has devoted his life to storytelling, captivating audiences with his tales. But now he is starting to wonder if the new world has left him behind.

Just when he thinks he will never write again, his own life and the lives of the people around him begin to spiral out of control - providing the inspiration for the greatest story he has ever told. A story of love, jealousy, intrigue, and betrayal.

Set against the background of Japan's first incursions into Korea, Sei offers a wise and witty reflection on the nature of storytelling, its perils and delights, its lies and, ultimately, its truth.

One of Australia's most internationally successful writers, Lian Hearn's books have been translated into 42 languages and have sold millions of copies. Nine of her books are set in a mythical country based on medieval Japan: these are the five Tales of the Otori books, starting with Across the Nightingale Floor; The Tale of Shikanoko: Emperor of the Eight Islands and Lord of the Darkwood; and Children of the Otori: Orphan Warriors and Sibling Assassins (to be published in 2020). She has also written two historical novels set in nineteenth-century Japan, Blossoms and Shadows and The Storyteller and His Three Daughters.

Lian's passionate interest in Japan began when she was a teenager. She received an AsiaLink arts fellowship for travel and research in 1999. She travels frequently to Japan and has studied Japanese for many years. She has always been deeply interested in languages and has a BA and MA in French and Spanish from Oxford University. She worked as an editor and film critic in England and Australia before beginning her career as a novelist in 1986, under the name of Gillian Rubinstein, with the bestselling and award-winning children's novel Space Demons.

A good continuation from "Blossoms and Shadows".
An interesting change from Lian's normal writing style, making it more in favour of the storytelling style of the main character.
Short, yet satisfying read.

The Storyteller and His Three Daughters by Lian Hearn was a really nice read, and I enjoyed the temporary immersion into the old Japanese family ways. The storyteller was likeable and saddled as he was with a strong wife and three feisty daughters, he certainly needed patience. Add to this a lot of political intrigue and he definitely had plenty of material for storytelling. I would recommend this book highly.
