Gregory Maguire's Wicked is brilliant. It is the story of the friendship of Elphaba and Glinda who are living in a politically tumultuous Oz. The notions of good and bad are far less black and white and Elphaba, who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, is humanized for the first time. It is dark and complicated, but there are also very sweet and funny moments.
