Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells are characterized by invasiveness and spread (which is unlimited cell growth and division). These dividing cells have the ability to invade and destroy nearby tissues, or to move to distant tissues in a process called metastasis. These abilities are the characteristics of a malignant tumor in contrast to a benign tumor, which is characterized by a specific growth and the inability to invade or the ability to metastasize. However, a benign tumor can sometimes develop into a malignant cancer. About 5-10% of cancers are caused by genetic defects inherited from a person's parents, and cancer can be detected with specific signs and symptoms or screening tests. Then further tests are done by medical imaging and confirmed with a biopsy.
