In 'A Thin Ghost and Others', M. R. James conjures an atmosphere of creeping dread with his signature literary finesse. This collection of horror short stories pieces together narratives that marry everyday realism to the supernatural. Through his deft employment of antiquarian themes and locations, James's prose is adept at generating unsettling scenarios, illuminating the genre's traditional gothic roots while imbuing it with a distinctly Edwardian sensibility. The five tales ['The Residence at Whitminster,' 'The Diary of Mr. Poynter,' 'An Episode of Cathedral History,' 'The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance,' 'Two Doctors'] encapsulate James's talent for subtle horror, relying on implication and scholarly protagonists to unravel the spectral mysteries therein. M. R. James's own academic background as a medievalist and scholar at Cambridge University notably influences his storytelling. His expertise in history and manuscript preservation surfaces in the authenticity of the settings and the intellectual pursuits of his characters. This scholarly grounding, coupled with James's presidency at the Eton Society and Cambridge's Choral Society, manifests in narratives enriched by a deep knowledge of English folklore, history, and ecclesiastical architecture, undoubtedly shaping his macabre yet erudite tales. 'A Thin Ghost and Others' comes highly recommended to aficionados of classic ghost stories and connoisseurs of literary horror. M. R. James meticulously weaves erudition into his eerie stories, appealing to the discerning reader with a taste for sophisticated, atmospheric terror. The collection stands as a testament to James's enduring legacy as a master of the ghost story, with each piece offering a discreet peek into the shadowy corners of the human psyche and the past that haunts it.

M. R. James

Montague Rhodes James was born on 1 August 1862 near Bury St Edmunds, though he spent long periods of his later life in Suffolk, which provided the setting for many of his ghost stories. He studied at Eton and Kings College, Cambridge, where he was eventually elected Fellow, and then made Provost in 1905. In 1918 he became Provost of Eton.

He was a renowed medievalist and biblical scholar, and published works on palaeography, antiquarianism, bibliography and history, guides to Suffolk and Norfolk, as well as editing a collection of ghost stories by Sheridan Le Fanu.

However, he remains best known for his own ghost stories, which were published in several collections including Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904), A Thin Ghost and Other Stories (1919), A Warning to the Curious (1925) and a collected edition in 1931. M. R. James never married and died on 12 June 1936.
