The story follows two American women, Miss Grace and Miss Bessie, who travel to England and find themselves in the midst of British high society. They encounter two English gentlemen, Lord Lambeth and Mr. Percy Beaumont, with whom they form romantic connections.Through the interactions of these characters, James highlights the contrasting attitudes and expectations of American and European society. The American women bring their directness and egalitarian ideals, while the English gentlemen navigate the complexities of their aristocratic upbringing and societal obligations."An International Episode" satirizes the differences in social class, manners, and cultural norms between the two nations. James uses humor and irony to comment on the misunderstandings and challenges that arise from these cultural clashes, particularly in the context of love and courtship. The novella is notable for its sharp observations of character, witty dialogue, and exploration of the social dynamics and expectations of the time. It offers a nuanced portrayal of the complexities of cross-cultural relationships and the challenges faced by individuals navigating unfamiliar social landscapes.

Henry James

Henry James was born in New York in 1843 and was educated in Europe and America. He left Harvard Law School in 1863, after a year's attendance, to concentrate on writing, and from 1869 he began to make prolonged visits to Europe, eventually settling in England in 1876.

His literary output was prodigious and of the highest quality: more than ten outstanding novels, including The Portrait of a Lady and The American; countless novellas and short stories; as well as innumerable essays, letters, and other pieces of critical prose. Known by contemporary fellow novelists as 'the Master', James died in Kensington, London, in 1916.
