A memoir of a young Englishman moving to Nassau Bahamas in the 1970s to begin a new life in the post of Chief Inspector of the Bahamas Humane Society. Initially shocked by the scale of animal suffering he continues undaunted, despite death threats and brushes with voodoo, to battle issues such as the suffering iconic surrey horses, potcake dogs and the horrors of the Hobby Horse racetrack, helped by a small motley crew of staff and volunteers, and his faithful dog Condor.
The work is relentless, and the frustrations, emotional strain and horrors become overwhelming and soon take their toll on his mental health, but luckily the good times compensate for the bad. Follow him as he adjusts to the Bahamian way of life, joins the expat community and makes friends, explores the island and finds sanctuary from his harrowing work on Paradise Island which was still an oasis of calm.
