Jane Porter was one of the most popular writers of Regency England, whose novels were more popular than Jane Austen. ‘The Scottish Chiefs’ is now widely regarded as one of the earliest examples of the historical novel, pre-dating Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Waverley’. Although Porter was one of the most prominent writers of her time, the profligacy and financial indecisions of her brothers kept her very poor, as she was constantly obliged to pay off their debts. Despite her claims to have laid the foundations of historical fiction, she died largely dismissed and ridiculed by Victorian critics. In more recent times, Porter’s place in the history of English literature has received greater attention, as she is recognised as having crafted and pioneered many of the narrative tools now associated with both the national tale and the historical novel.
