本书作为我社“最经典英语文库”第13辑中的一种，精选由俄罗斯著名文学家、诗人、小说家亚历山大·普希金的经典作品《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》。该作写的是彼得堡贵族青年奥涅金，他厌倦了上流社会生活，由于一个偶然的机会，到了俄国的乡村。在那里他结识了地主拉林家的长女达吉雅娜。达吉雅娜对奥涅金一见钟情。经过激烈的思想斗争，她给奥涅金写了一封深表爱慕之情的信。而奥涅金却根本不能理解达吉雅娜的真挚情意，竟轻浮地当面表示拒绝，说什么自己不宜享受家庭幸福等等。后来，奥涅金在决斗中杀死了自己的好友连斯基，便离开了乡村。几年之后，奥涅金在彼得堡上流社会的一次交际活动上又遇见达吉雅娜。此时的达吉雅娜已从一个纯朴的农家少女出落成上流社会“女神”般的贵妇人。奥涅金为虚荣心所驱使，为她神魂颠倒，拼命追求达吉雅娜。而达吉雅娜则真诚地告诉他：此刻她仍然爱他，却不能属于他，因为她要忠于自己的丈夫。
