The first five chapters describe what travelers can see or learn driving near and around the lake and links magnificent sites where they can hike, bike, ski, swim, or drive to major geological themes. There are many new insights on world-famous locations including Emerald Bay, Cave Rock, Stateline Point, and South Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe tsunami theme (with revelations from underwater geology, about which most people know very little) is a big story, a lot of it presented here for the first time. Brief, bullet-point summaries illustrate that Lake Tahoe is part of a much greater historical milieu that includes the "ancient ones" (the Washoe people), in addition to "anglo" history. Countless excellent Lake Tahoe books have been published, but most are to be read at home, have pretty pictures (many include amazing photographic images) with little discussion. Certain "guides" list places to stay, shop, eat, gamble, or places to camp, swim, hike or ski. This book, which can also be enjoyed at home, uses numerous color photos and maps to guide the traveler or explorer on day trips around all the routes in the Tahoe basin, and reveals that every viewpoint has an important story to tell.
