Memories from Southern Africa Book 1: This picture book is the first of 7 which cover some touring - mostly guided - mostly in South Africa (along the famed Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town), but also a trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and a safari excursion in Botswana. After arrival in Port Elizabeth, we were taken to our first ‘safari’ in the Addo Elephant Park. Our hosts were established as a bush camp (pretty elegant ‘camp’, though) in the park called the Gorah Elephant Camp. What followed was a game drive in the morning flooded by another in the afternoon and perhaps an evening one. All in a comfortable roofless 4WD with enough room for 8 people (including the driver/guide). To our amazement and pleasure our first wild encounter the next morning was a lioness eating her kill from the night before. She was joined by a young male. From then on, the days were filled with close-up views of a huge range of animals and birds. As well there were not-so-close appearances of other smaller animals. There was a visit to a water-hole timed to coincide with a herd of elephants coming for a drink. These included some quite small ones. Red Hartebeest, Impala, Warthog, Zebra and Kudu abounded. A real highlight - one of many - was the chance to sit in the truck and wait while a Black Rhino wandered out of the Bush and had a drink from a small waterhole, maybe 30 metres from us. The next morning we were woken by the sound of ‘coughing’ lions (I don’t think they do much roaring.) coming from the female and the male on the grassy slopes a few hundred yards from our thatched-roof, canvas-walled luxury ‘tent’. The place was guarded all night by staff, so getting eaten was not likely; anyway the animals are used to people. Very sadly the safari came to an end. Out next visit was to an elephant sanctuary where you could get far too close to younger elephants which were still too big. There are 105 still images and accompanying pages of minimal description. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken by the author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of animal safaris in South Africa, have a read. If you wondered what this part of the world might be like to see, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these ‘Memories from Southern Africa’.
