Its pervasive nature defies borders, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses, affecting people from all walks of life. Despite the progress made in the realm of gender equality, the persistence of gender-based violence reminds us that there is much work left to be done. This book seeks to shed light on the magnitude of gender-based violence and the urgent need to address its underlying causes. It serves as a call to action, an invitation to confront and challenge the societal norms, structures, and biases that perpetuate such violence. Through an exploration of its complexities and impacts, we aim to foster understanding, compassion, and empathy for the survivors whose voices have been silenced for far too long. Gender-based violence encompasses a range of harmful behaviours, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. Its manifestations can be found within households, intimate relationships, workplaces, public spaces, and the virtual world. It targets individuals on the basis of their gender, reinforcing inequality and denying them their fundamental rights. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, constituting a vast majority of the victims. However, it is crucial to recognize that men, non-binary individuals, and marginalised communities are also subject to this deeply rooted problem. Behind the statistics lie the stories of survivors whose lives have been irrevocably altered by gender-based violence. The pain, fear, and trauma they endure permeate not only their own existence but also extend to their families, relationships, and wider communities. The scars run deep, leaving behind mistrust, diminished self-worth, and long-lasting emotional and physical consequences. It is essential to acknowledge that these acts of violence are not isolated incidents but deeply rooted in power imbalances, societal beliefs, and harmful patriarchal norms that perpetuate inequality. By unpacking the complex web that enables gender-based violence to persist, we can begin to dismantle it. Education, awareness, and comprehensive legal frameworks are crucial in creating an environment where survivors are supported, perpetrators are held accountable, and cultural shifts can take place. Providing survivors with safe spaces, access to justice, counselling, and rehabilitation services is integral to their healing and recovery. The struggle against gender-based violence is an integral part of the broader movement toward gender equality and social justice. This book is a call to action, a plea to mobilise our communities, and a testament to the strength of survivors. It reminds us that our fight against gender-based violence extends far beyond the pages contained within. Together, we must engage in the collective struggle to dismantle the hierarchies that devalue and endanger lives. As we embark upon this illuminating journey, let us remember that change starts with us—within our homes, schools, workplaces, and institutions. By embracing empathy and equity, we can create a future where violence is replaced by respect, where survival is transformed into thriving, and where every individual can; etc.
