Are people honest and virtuous? William Shakespeare's tragedies "King Lear", "Othello" and "Julius Caesar" show how easily virtue and honor turn into nothing under the weight of fateful decisions and human imperfection. "King Lear" is a play about a monarch betrayed by his daughters, whose possessions crumble like his mind giving way to the chaos of madness. "Othello" is a tragedy about a respected general who fell into an artfully woven web of deception and allowed fierce jealousy to drown out the arguments of his heart and mind. "Julius Caesar" is a story about ambition and political intrigue, about how people make mistakes and power attracts too many. Enjoy Shakespeare's elegant style in the original language while reading the greatest tragedies in the history of English literature.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in 1564. The date of his birth is unknown but is celebrated on 23 April, which happens to be St George's Day, and the day in 1616 on which Shakespeare died.

Aged eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children. Around 1585 William joined an acting troupe on tour in Stratford from London, and thereafter spent much of his life in the capital. By 1595 he had written five of his history plays, six comedies and his first tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. In all, he wrote thirty-seven plays and much poetry, and earned enormous fame in his own lifetime in prelude to his immortality.
