The characters in "Soldiers Three" are portrayed as colorful and lively individuals, each with their unique personalities. Mulvaney is a boisterous Irishman, Ortheris is a cunning Cockney, and Learoyd is a quiet and steadfast Yorkshireman. Through their interactions and escapades, the stories highlight the dynamics of their friendship and their shared experiences in the military. The collection showcases various aspects of military life in colonial India, including barrack-room humor, soldierly rituals, clashes with local populations, and the challenges faced by British soldiers in adapting to the unfamiliar environment. Kipling captures the language, mannerisms, and attitudes of the soldiers, providing an authentic portrayal of the British military presence in India during that era.The stories in "Soldiers Three" often have a humorous and lighthearted tone, but they also touch on more serious themes such as loyalty, honor, bravery, and the psychological effects of warfare. Kipling's writing style is characterized by his keen attention to detail, vivid descriptions, and his ability to capture the essence of the characters and their surroundings. While "Soldiers Three" is primarily a work of fiction, Kipling's own experiences as the son of a British colonial official in India and his time working as a journalist in the region lend an air of authenticity to the stories. His firsthand knowledge of the military and colonial life enriches the narratives and provides readers with insights into the complexities of the time.

Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling was born in India in 1865. After intermittently moving between India and England during his early life, he settled in the latter in 1889, published his novel The Light That Failed in 1891 and married Caroline (Carrie) Balestier the following year.

They returned to her home in Brattleboro, Vermont, where Kipling wrote the two Jungle Books and Captains Courageous.

He continued to write prolifically and was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 but his later years were darkened by the death of his son John at the Battle of Loos in 1915. He died in 1936.
