“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.”

- Socrates.

Two centuries before the Stoics lived The Sophists, star philosophers who roamed Athens during the fifth century B.C. commanding large fees for speaking and private lessons. They offered practical education, speculation on the nature of the universe and knowledge in the art of life and politics. The most famous were Protagoras, Gorgias, Prodicus, Hippias, Thrasymachus, Callicles, Lycophron, Antiphon and Cratylus.

Stoic Six Pack 7 – The Sophists brings key primary and secondary sources together in one volume for a fully rounded understanding of this early, often misunderstood philosophical movement:

  • The Sophists by Henry Sidgwick.

  • Dialogues Protagoras and Gorgias by Plato.

  • Memoirs of Socrates by Xenophon.

  • Stoic Self-control by William De Witt Hyde.

  • The Sophists – Biographical Sketches by William Smith.

  • Euthydemus by Plato.

Plato

Plato ranks among the most familiar ancient philosophers, along with his teacher, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle.

In addition to writing philosophical dialogues - used to teach logic, ethics, rhetoric, religion, and mathematics as well as philosophy - he founded Athens' Academy, the Western world's first institution of higher learning.

Xenophon

A philosopher, soldier, and historian of ancient Greece, Xenophon (c.430–354 B.C.) was a disciple of Socrates; he and Plato are the only two students whose records survive of the philosopher's conversation, life, and teachings.

In the Anabasis and Hellenica, Xenophon reported on events of his own era; the former recounts his participation in a Persian civil war, and the latter provides an important account of the end and aftermath of the Peloponnesian War.
