Tartarin of Tarascon is a novel written by a French author, Alphonse Daudet. It tells the burlesque adventures of Tartarin, a hero of Tarascon, a small town in the southern of France. His adventures and reputation as a swashbuckler finally force him to travel in search of lions. Instead of finding a romantic, mysterious Oriental fantasy land, he found a sordid world suspended between Europe and the Middle East. And the worst of the world, there were no lions left. By a coincidence, Tartarin encounters a lion and kills him. Unfortunately, the lion was a mascot of the local military garrison and he was arrested and dragged in front of a judge. But with full of luck, he was released and returns to Tarascon with the lion's skin as a hero.
