“Lies, my dear boy, can easily be recognized. There are two kind of them: those with short legs, and those with long noses. Your kind have long noses.”

When a block of wood destined to become a table leg suddenly starts talking, Master Antonio gives the wood to his poor neighbour Gepetto, who carves out of it a puppet. Mischievous from the start, Pinocchio gets up to all sorts of misadventures – burying gold coins to make them grow, turning into a donkey in the Land of Toys, and finding himself swallowed by the Terrible Dogfish. At first rebellious, the little marionette learns from his mistakes and becomes a real boy of flesh and blood.

With translations available in over 300 languages, Carlo Collodi’s masterpiece of children’s literature has become a worldwide phenomenon. Originally serialized in a magazine for children, the first complete volume was published in 1883 to instant success.

Carlo Collodi

Carlo Collodi (1826–1890) was the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini. The Florence native took the name of his mother's native village, where he attended school.

Collodi served in the Tuscan army during the Italian wars of independence and founded a satirical weekly, Il Lampione.

The author of novels, plays, and political sketches, he translated Charles Perrault's fairy tales from the French, and in 1881 his Storia di un burratino (Story of a Puppet) was published in installments in the Giornale per i bambini, appearing two years later in book form as The Adventures of Pinocchio.
