In 1830 slave Josiah Henson escaped from Charles County, Maryland, to Upper Canada where he founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves.
His autobiography, the full title of which is The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself, inspired the character of George Harris in Uncle Tom's Cabin.
