Madagascar is an island nation off of Africa's southeast coast. After Greenland, New Guinea, and Borneo, Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world by area. Although being just around 250 miles (400 km) from the continent of Africa, Indonesia, more than 3,000 miles (4,800 km) to the east, is where most of Madagascar's population originates.
A land ornamented with immaculate beaches, verdant jungles, bulging golden lemurs, and the villages of long-gone French colonies comes to mind when Madagascar is even tangentially mentioned. This location, which is ranked as the fourth-largest island in the world, has something to offer every tourist. For beach bums, there is an archipelago of white sand beaches; for nature enthusiasts, there are rainforests and a variety of critters that provide a closer look at the animal kingdom; and for history buffs, there are UNESCO World Heritage Sites to see on this island.
