Author's Note:
The Lewis & Clark Stowaway Journals are historical fiction, meaning that there are elements of fiction (things that are made up) in this book but it is written with a real historical background. The biggest element of fiction in this book is Alexander. I created the Alexander character and found a way to place him inside of the expedition. Some of the things he did were from my imagination, but most of the events have been recreated from the actual journal events written by Meriwether Lewis & William Clark.
Mr. Barton, the botanist, did exist and was set to join the expedition but never went. Lewis spent much time with him before the expedition began, learning what he could about the plant life they would encounter. At least 89 peace medals were commissioned to be made by Meriwether Lewis at approximately $7.60 each, which was a lot of money in 1804. Lewis paid for these medals with his own money because he believed so strongly that they would help the mission. While many of the Native American chiefs appreciated the medals, some of them believed they were poisonous and would pass them on to their enemies hoping to pass on to them the "bad medicine".
