There are a billion disabled people all over the planet. A disability doesn’t have to hold a person back from achieving success but they often do because of the politics of many countries which don’t help disabled people get access to society at large by removing barriers to most buildings.
The world is wealthy enough such that we have the money to provide the basics of living to every disabled person and we also have the money to make societies accessible to disabled people but we don’t because the people who run the world are basically greedy, selfish and evil. They would rather spend money on the military than on helping people.
Every disabled person should have the human right to live a full life like everybody else.
Senior citizens and children have it especially hard.
The most basic problem is simply to keep disabled people healthy. The idea of mobility and access around the world is still a far-off dream that won’t be achieved anytime soon unless we go through a major change in world government like the People Power Program I created which would give people control of their governments, not politicians.
It’s hard just to get basic healthcare in much of the world either paid by the government or at a very low, affordable price.
The needs are:
reduce barriers to mobility
rehabilitation
assistive technologies
We need laws and money for these things to happen.
Telerehabilitation is counselling and professional referrals over the computer screen or telephone.
The need is virtually infinite to build an infrastructure everywhere with barrier-free buildings and public transportation, assistive technologies, social workers and caregivers available to help everybody meet their needs.
Laws are one thing. Enforcing them is another.
In some cultures, they see disabled people as demonic people cursed by the devil.
The human race has the wealth to create good lives for disabled people but we don’t because we spend more time on the stock market and wars. The problem is in the leadership of the human race.
Whatever your problem is, you’re basically on your own. You got some government programs and nonprofit groups out there to help you.
The recommendations are:
Enable access to all mainstream policies, systems and services.
Invest in specific programmes and services for people with disabilities.
Adopt a national disability strategy and plan of action.
Help disabled people get jobs.
Spend money on disability programs.
Increase public awareness and understanding of disability.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international human rights document put out by the United Nations to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
Most countries pledged to adhere to its points as the law of the land.
The points are as follows:
to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity
there should be reasonable accommodation
and access for everybody
.
everybody has the right to participate in political and public life, and cultural life, recreation and sport
everybody has access to roads, buildings, and information
There are nine guiding principles:
Respect for inherent dignity
Non-discrimination
Full and effective participation and inclusion in society
