The tragic loss of Lizzie has left her family with a sense of unspeakable loss. Literally - no one in the house is speaking to each other, at all, about anything. But Laurie is determined that they not lose themselves, as well. She wants to break out of their Silent Mourning, and find again what has made them a loving family.
