Garnered from some five decades of Daisaku Ikeda’s poems, this small collection honors the women who raise their own families along with the women who raise the future leaders for peace in their SGI families. The poet shows keen understanding of the trials of “mothers of kosen-rufu,” the women who nurture the SGI movement to spread the Buddhist philosophy of happiness and peace. He praises their strength and applauds their courage, cries with them in their times of grief and sings with them in their times of triumph, exhorts them to never be defeated and urges them to always stand for truth and justice in their rightful place on the world’s stage.“It is you who will create a new world,” he writes, “the only ones in whom I place my trust.”The poems are necessarily a product of their time and place, reflecting the political and social realities of the day. But they each were selected for the universal and timeless messages they contain, the message of the power of women, the power of a mother’s love, and the message that reminds us of everything our mothers have done and the gratitude we owe them all.
