“The government (or humanity) would not permit capital punishment for one man, but they permitted the murder of millions a little at a time.”

Having conquered the world several hundred years earlier, the One State begins building a spaceship in order to invade other planets. With all citizens living in glass buildings under constant watch, it is the spaceship’s chief engineer D-503 who discovers an underground movement that intends to topple the government. Venturing to the other side of the Green Wall, he encounters a new world unlike anything he’s known before. Will D-503 join the fight for individual freedom, or remain loyal to the One State?

An early example of dystopian fiction, Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We was first published in English in 1924. Taking the ideas of industrialized society and totalitarianism to extremes, the Russian author’s post-apocalyptic novel was a direct influence on George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.
