Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by Catherine’s father. After her father’s death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley. Heathcliff also wrongly believes that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, so he leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He then proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries.

The action of the story is chaotic and unrelentingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely Mooreland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Original reviews for the novel were deeply divided, as it was considered controversial because of its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was unusually stark, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day, including religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality. At times dark and sinister, the novel broke with many contemporary ideas as to how romantic literature should be composed.

Wuthering Heights rose to become a model of a romantic, gothic novel full of passion, jealousy and tragic dark love. The main characters Heathcliff and Catherine have been firmly established as the most tragic couple in literature since Romeo and Juliet.
