Later, when Edmund inherited the netsuke , they unlocked a story far larger than he could ever have imagined The Ephrussis came from Odessa, and at one time were the largest grain exporters in the world; in the 1870s, Charles Ephrussi was part of a wealthy new generation settling in Paris.

Charles s passion was collecting; the netsuke, bought when Japanese objects were all the rage in the salons, were sent as a wedding present to his banker cousin in Vienna. This is one of the best books I have read. I am interested in Japanese netsuke and this was the reason I bought the iBook first and now I am buying this to give as a present. I now know about the interest in Japanese art in Europe in 1800s, the education and affluence of Jewish families in Paris and Vienna, of the Second World war and the dispossessian of the Jewish families. Then to Post War in Japan and the American policies there. And what a nice ending. The true story of a family, and so well told, and so much to learn as you enjoy it. JB
