Key recommendations include significant changes to the current recommended levels of daily carbohydrate, dietary fibre and sugar intakes. Evidence considered in this report shows that increasing sugars intake leads to a corresponding increase in energy intake. For overweight individuals, reducing the percentage energy intake from free sugars, in the absence of increased energy intake from other sources, could contribute to a reduction in total energy intake and result in weight loss. For individuals who are maintaining a healthy body weight, the reduced intake of energy from free sugars should be replaced by energy from starches, sugars contained within the cellular structure of foods and for those who consume dairy products, by lactose naturally present in milk and milk products. Reducing consumption of free sugars would help to lower the risk of dental caries in all individuals
